Nestled along the picturesque Housatonic River, overlooking the stunning coastline of Long Island Sound, Mill River Country Club has been a beacon of golf and social camaraderie for over 85 years. With its rich history, proud membership, and strong ties to the local community, the club has become a cherished institution along the Connecticut coast.

The club's origins date back to 1923 when it was established as a country club with a nine-hole golf course on what was once Stratford farmland. The golf course was later expanded to a full 18 holes in 1925, with renowned golf course architect Thomas Winton at the helm. Winton's expertise and vision helped shape the course into one of the finest in New England, drawing admiration from golf enthusiasts far and wide. Alongside the exceptional golf facilities, the clubhouse quickly became a focal point for numerous social events, attracting prominent professionals and business owners from Stratford and Bridgeport.

However, like many institutions, Mill River Country Club faced challenges during the Great Depression. The economic downturn following the 1929 stock market crash led to a decline in membership, with 130 members resigning between 1930 and 1931. To weather the storm, the club reduced greens fees and adapted to the difficult times. Fortunately, by the late 1930s, the club experienced a remarkable recovery, with membership returning to its peak levels.

In 1937, Mill River took center stage in the golfing world as it became the host of the prestigious Shoreline Open Championship, a major PGA Tour event. For 17 years, until 1953, the club welcomed some of the most talented golfers of the era, including legends like Gene Sarazen, Julius Boros, and Tommy Armour. This event solidified Mill River's reputation as a premier golfing destination and introduced the club to a wider audience.

Over the years, Mill River Country Club continued to attract significant tournaments and events. It hosted two State of Connecticut Opens and even welcomed the U.S. Ladies Amateur Championship. In recognition of its exceptional facilities and challenging course, the club was chosen to host the Players Ability Test for the Connecticut Section of the PGA, starting in 2002 and continuing annually.

Beyond golf, Mill River has always been more than just a country club. Its Olympic-sized swimming pool, constructed in the 1960s, has been a popular attraction for members and a training ground for the Mill River Swim Team. The swim team, composed of children of club members, has participated in various inter-club events, fostering camaraderie and providing opportunities for young swimmers to develop their skills and compete.

The club's main clubhouse, which offers panoramic views of the golf course, underwent extensive renovations in the mid-1970s, transforming it into an elegant and inviting space. With a seating capacity of approximately 225, the clubhouse has become a preferred venue for members' dining experiences, gala events, and special occasions such as weddings, engagement parties, and anniversary celebrations. For a more relaxed atmosphere, the grill room and outdoor patio dining areas offer additional options for casual dining and socializing.

One unique feature of Mill River Country Club is the presence of four modern bowling alleys on the lower level of the clubhouse. These bowling alleys have provided additional sources of enjoyment for members and their children, hosting adult and youth bowling programs and leagues that further strengthen the sense of community within the club.

Perhaps one of the most appealing characteristics of Mill River Country Club is its longstanding commitment to diversity and inclusivity. Throughout its history, the club has warmly welcomed individuals of all ethnic, cultural, and religious backgrounds, fostering an environment where everyone feels valued and embraced.

As Mill River Country Club looks to the future, it continues to uphold its legacy as a premier golfing destination and a hub of social connectivity. With ongoing renovations to the golf course and driving range in 2005, the club remains dedicated to providing members with exceptional facilities and experiences. Its commitment to preserving tradition, fostering community engagement, and offering a welcoming environment for all ensures that Mill River Country Club will continue to thrive for generations to come.
